Product claims: Neither lipstick nor lip gloss, this matte lip cream is a new kind of lip color that goes on silky smooth and sets to a matte finish. Soft Matte Lip Cream is surprisingly durable and unlike some matte lipstick formulas also moisturizing.

This is the first matte lippie I have ever bought, so I was really excited about it. I was also able to get it while it was on sale, so that was an added bonus. The first thing I noticed was the packaging. It’s really cute, and the lid comes in a matte texture. It reminds me of the matte laptop cases that I love. The wand is quite sturdy as well. It provides easy application over both the top and bottom lip because of its shape.

When I tried the product on, I found that it glides smoothly over the lips with a creamy feeling. For the first few minutes, it would actually feel like a drier version of City Color’s creamy lip stains. It sets pretty quickly, and when it did, I couldn’t help but feel a little alarmed. It set on all the lines of my lips, and they looked drier than ever! They didn’t feel dry, but the look of it was definitely not appealing.

I tried using this product in layers to see if that would help. Again, it applied smoothly, and it looked great for the first few minutes. But after setting, it just really felt like my lips were being made to look like the Sahara Desert 🙁

I gave it one last shot by applying lip balm first. I even tried putting lip balm after, but this didn’t seem to help either. This made me really sad because I love the color, and the product seemed so promising.

In the end, I just decided to use this product for ombre lip looks. Thankfully, that only requires me to use a little product over the middle area of my lips, so it’s not that bad.  The longevity of this is also really bad considering that it’s matte.

My conclusion is that maybe this shade isn’t the best representation of the product. Lighter colors are definitely much harder to work with, so I’m willing to buy some other shades to test out the quality of this product again.

But the Tokyo shade gets a 1.5/5 for me 🙁 What a shame. I really liked the color of this one.
